William Hill is the Official Sports Betting Partner of NBA
Famed British sportsbook William Hill pulled off one of its biggest coups in early October by reaching a landmark deal with the NBA. The partnership between the two parties means that William Hill is the NBA’s official sportsbook.
William Hill Continues strong push into US sports gaming market
The deal will allow William Hill to use official NBA data, stats, and the famous logo of the basketball association. In turn, the NBA will promote William Hill across its various platforms and the sportsbooks’ logo will be seen by millions of basketball fans like never before.
William Hill’s sponsorship of the NBA sees the company continue its strong push into the United States’ sports gaming market. In May 2018, the US Supreme Court overturned a law banning sports betting in the country. The ruling led to each individual state being given the opportunity to pass their own laws governing sports betting.
Just over a year after the sports betting ban was lifted, over 42 of the 50 American states had already or were moving to pass laws allowing legalized sports betting. The changing mood in the US towards sports betting has led to the dawning of a new era and William Hill’s NBA sponsorship is just the beginning of what is to come.
William Hill teams up with Washington DC teams for sponsorships
Washington DC’s Capital One Arena is a mere 1.3 miles from the very building that the US Supreme Court overruled the banning on sports betting. It is the Capital One Arena that is the sight of William Hill’s latest sponsorship as the largest sportsbook in America has teamed up with Monumental Sports and Entertainment.
Following the announcement of William Hill entering a deal with the NBA, it was made official that the sportsbook would work hand in hand with Monumental Sports and Entertainment to be the official bookie of the NBA’s Washington Wizards, the NHL’s Washington Capitals, and the WNBA’s Washington Mystics.
The sponsorship between William Hill and Monumental will see the Capital One Arena open up its very own sportsbook. The betting shop will be a William Hill-branded venue giving fans in Washington DC the same great in-store experience gamblers experience elsewhere in the world. The shop will be open on game days allowing basketball and ice hockey fans to place wagers while attending events. However, it will also be open on non-game days giving sports bettors the chance to stop by and place a bet on the event they choose.
The possibilities seem endless between William Hill and Monumental. There is even the possibility of using the inside of the Capital One Arena for major sporting events in which fans can view large television screens to see the action. William Hill could potentially sponsor other groups within the Monumental Sports and Entertainment family. The company owns and operates seven different sports teams in total: Arena Football League team the Washington Valor, AFL’s Baltimore Brigade, NBA's Washington Wizards, NBA G League’s Capital City Go-Go, NBA 2K League’s Wizards District Gaming, the NHL’s Washington Capitals, and the WNBA's Washington Mystics.
A growing reach in the US
William Hill entered the US market in 2012 in Las Vegas. At the time, Sin City was the only city in which gamblers could legally bet on sports in the US. In 2018, the Supreme Court’s overruling of PASPA saw William Hill stretch its reach across the US.
The British sportsbook owns and operates brick and mortar bet shops in Nevada and New Jersey. Online gamblers in Iowa, Indiana, and West Virginia can now use the William Hill website to place bets. Meanwhile, William Hill has shops located inside casinos in four other American states.
Washington DC is a key area for sports gambling due to it being a city like no other in America. The nation’s capital is overseen by the federal government rather than a state government. Sports gambling’s rules and regulations in Washington DC are far different, which is why it is such an attractive locale for sportsbooks.
Capital One Arena is not the only sports venue in the city to get the go-ahead to open a sportsbook. Major League Soccer team DC United could open a sportsbook at Audi Field while Major League Baseball’s Washington Nationals could also launch a shop inside Nationals Park. Both professional sports teams would need to partner with a sportsbook such as William Hill to open a shop within their stadiums. According to the city of Washington DC, the Nationals and/or DC United would need to pay just $500,000 to open a sportsbook inside their stadiums.
The opportunities for further sponsorship and to capture Washington DC’s sports betting market would be an incredible opportunity for William Hill. That is if any deals with Nationals Park or Audi Field were agreed upon.
What next for William Hill’s American adventure?
The NBA may be William Hill’s biggest partnership deal to date, but it isn’t the first and it won’t be the last. The NHL has also welcomed William Hill as a sponsor after previously agreeing deals with two other sportsbooks. In October 2018, the sportsbook agreed a multi-year deal with the New Jersey Devils. The deal was announced a month after William Hill and the Vegas Golden Knights also agreed upon a sponsorship. Both New Jersey and Las Vegas are areas in which sports betting has been welcomed with open arms.
While many sports and non-sports fans look at the addition of sportsbooks as a way for individuals to simply wager money, the NHL and NBA see it much differently. The sponsorships these leagues have formed with William Hill shows them to be offering a totally unique fan experience.
Sports teams in the US have long offered fans a far different in-arena experience than in other countries. This experience has been used to bring fans back again and again. However, the addition of sportsbooks to stadiums now gives fans experiences unlike ever before in the US.
William Hill has been very aggressive in its work in the US over the last 18 months. Right now, the US is a wild west in terms of legalised sports gambling and the famed British bookie is taming the landscape through various agreements. The future looks incredibly bright in the US for William Hill and the leagues and teams it works with.
As more American states pass laws approving legalized sports betting, the opportunities for William Hill will only grow.
